This dissertation addresses the perspectives of two generations of women in Catalunya, Spain through research conducted primarily in Barcelona. Over seventy qualitative interviews were conducted within and outside of Barcelona, within the region of Catalunya. The majority of the interviews conducted were with women. Two groups were interviewed: men and women between the ages of 25-40 and those over the age of 65. My research produced a comparison of two forms of pro-natalist governments: each government's economic and social policies, the degrees of Church influence on the governments and differences and similarities in gender paradigms present for both generations. Both generations experienced regimes that represented themselves as a government that 'cares, ' but were left questioning the veracity of that assertion. Women and their families recognized the state's pro-natalism, but also cited social, economic and personal limiting factors which influenced their decisions to have, or not to have, children. This dissertation demonstrates the state's impact on conceptualizations of gender, motherhood, and work, indicating that the different forms of power utilized by pro-natalist states do not greatly impact rates of reproduction. However, states, regardless of the form of power used, strongly influence gender roles and perceptions of what a 'good' mother, worker, and woman looks like.
