The intent of this research is to understand the support that is working well for families and to evaluate the gaps in coverage. The results are a tool to encourage families' use of successful programs, nd programs to cover what is missing, or develop programming to meet their needs. While our respondents were incredibly resourceful and inspirational, they are also struggling. The nancial strain of military life weaves itself throughout the results. They don't have enough in savings to cover emergencies. Families go into debt when they move -- the greatest stressor during that process being money. They have trouble paying for child care, education, and for about 15 percent, food. This report will illustrate what life is like for our military and veteran families, and how we can help them succeed. The United States relies on the services of the volunteer force, and their families are the bedrock.

Family members of service personnel with polytraumatic injuries face a wide range of challenges. Research has shown that family member adaptation and adjustment to the caregiver role has a significant impact on the well-being of the person with the injuries. The Veterans Health Administration is rapidly developing services to meet the needs of severely injured service personnel and their family members. The purpose of the present study was to test the feasibility of a method of assessment to identify the needs of individual family members of service personnel and veterans receiving inpatient rehabilitation services at the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC) located within the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Family member needs and emotional distress levels were quantitatively assessed. Qualitative data was collected with the intent of gaining a better understanding of the needs of families of individuals with severe injury from within a military cultural context. Results of this study suggest emotional distress levels of family members of persons receiving treatment on the PRC are not clinically significant. Study participants report overwhelming satisfaction with the program of care offered to patients and family members on the PRC. Furthermore, results of this study suggest that family members benefited from participating in the study. A strength-based family care pathway that utilizes an individual assessment of family needs is proposed and recommended for use with family members of individuals enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration polytrauma network services.

The United States responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 by entering into military battle in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, a conflict that is officially known as Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In March, 2003 a second conflict was begun in Iraq referred to as Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). The challenges of the combined conflicts have had a tremendous effect on the United States' military. Troops are experiencing multiple and extensive deployments involving increased numbers of women and parents of young children, requiring long and stressful separations from family and community. ☐ This study was conducted in the state of Delaware, and focuses on the reintegration of military veterans and their families upon return from deployment using the lens of systems, social organization theory and ecological theories. In order to ascertain if and how the needs of military families are being met, interviews were carried out with individuals who had experienced deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan as a service or family member. The interviews were analyzed revealing: (a) adaptation from military to civilian life creates obstacles, (b) lack of accessibility to services is a support barrier, (c) military families experience a sense of marginalization from the media and the public and (d) support exists primarily from family members. ☐ The results are important because they reflect the current state of support and indicate that attention is needed to improve methods of delivering and creating support systems for military service members and their families.
